Where did I started?
I was using pencils, gouaches and watercolors before I tried acrylic paints.
At the moment I tried acrylic paints it was the cheapest price that I can get in supermarkets. Why? Would you spend a lot of money on things you do not know? Maybe. Me not.
I started with the cheapest acrylic paints on different thicknesses of a paper and one day I dare to buy a canvas and try to paint on it and see how it goes.
So I got the cheapest brand from Van Bleiswijck Holland acrylic paint.
In my first try I noticed that canvas takes way much more paint then I was expecting, but I was enjoying working with them. So I started to search more about this type of paints and what they are made from.
Why do I like acrylic paints?
I like that acrylic paints are water-soluble and becomes water-resistant when dry. Depending on how much the paint is diluted with water, or mixed with acrylic mediums, gels, or pastes, the finished acrylic paints can be similar to watercolors or gouaches.
There are a lot of variations of colors and textures you can do with acrylic paints, plus it can be used on surfaces such as paper, cardboard, wood, compressed panels, metal, glass, fabric and ceramics.
What I am using at this moment?
I am using paper and canvas, looking forward to try it on other surfaces too. Also, I add gesso on every canvas that I will paint as Gesso prepares the surface for painting, making the surface slightly textured and ready to accept acrylic paints. Without gesso, the paints would soak into the weave of the canvas. Some people think that it is not necessary to use it, at least you are using oil paints. But I stay with the opinion that it is also needed for acrylic paints on canvas. My paints go all over the ages of the canvas so I paint ages as well.
The acrylic paints brand that I use and like how it works are from companies Amsterdam Acrylic, Liquitex, Golden Artist Colors, Daler Rowney and Pebeo.
Cost of paints?
There is a large range of acrylics on the market, from top-quality paints with high pigment content to cheap paints with little pigment and lots of filler. Depending on the quality and quantity of paints it might cost from 15 Euros to 60 Euros per one color of the paint.
Also, it depends on how big you wanna start painting your first painting. I would say start from A2 or A4 format canvas and see if you like it because acrylic paints also work on other surfaces and you might wanna try if you will not like canvas.
If you are just starting, I offer to buy not expensive paints first and try it out. Later you can buy better quality. But If you can afford - I would say go and buy good quality straight away. I notice a difference when I started using good quality paints. It improved my color variations in paintings.
I hope it helped. Have a wonderful day, Ausra Markeviciute
